Employer Internships

Students seek internships to gain invaluable job skills and contacts. Some students may also choose to earn course credit for their internship. Both undergraduate and master's students may complete internships for credit. For-credit internships are required for the Nature and Heritage Tourism minor and typically focus on expanding appreciation and protection of the environment.

  • To complete an internship and receive 3 hours of course credit, interns in the Geography and Environmental Studies Department must:

Complete a minimum of 150 work hours, either full or part-time

Be provided with valuable career launching skills and experiences

    Work in a safe environment

Ideally, interns should be paid for their work.

There are no university-imposed weekly work schedule requirements on internships that occur off campus. During the summer, many students can work full time. Depending on the intern’s schedule, they may be able to work for more than one semester, although sometimes they will not be earning course credit for the additional work.

Interns earning course credit are required to keep a daily work log identifying key tasks and people they met. At the end of their internship, students also turn in a report reflecting on the value of their internship as a launching point of their career. Additionally, interns submit the entry they will add to their resume describing their internship.

  • If you are hiring a student who is earning course credit for their internship, there are two forms which you will need to complete for the student to satisfy the course requirements. The Job Description form needs to be turned in within the first two weeks of employment. The Intern Evaluation form needs to be completed after the student works at least 150 hours.

  • Internships can start according to your needs and schedule. However, to increase the supply of candidates, it may be helpful to understand the University's semester schedules.
